Tongs
and roses – modern
women’s view of the reality
behind the romance combined perfectly in an artwork
called True Love when
designer Doris de Pont was looking for inspiration for
summer 2004-05. |

De Pont
commissions an artist each season to provide an original print that
fits in with her design vision of exploring the synergy between art
and wearability and making art accessible.
De Pont was thinking about tattoos and body decoration when she saw
Auckland artist Tracey Williams’ work, in particular a series
of Wonder Woman images. Williams takes inspiration from old sailor
tattoos with their hearts, swallows, roses and other images, as seen
in her True Love print of a 50s-style multi-coloured sunfrock.
Picking up the “frock” of the original artwork, de Pont
has gone for a strong “Wonder Woman” style throughout
the collection. Taken with Williams’ use of a female super hero
in her art, de Pont liked the thought of portraying busy modern women
as heroes who like a bit of glamour, with the edge in references to
tattoo art.
It’s a colourful collection designed to accentuate the female
form. Colours and patterns are mixed and deliberately mis-matched
with the mantra that “the only rule is, there are no rules”. |
